Opening to sound’s benefits: A practitioner’s perspective

In last month’s blog, Sarvinder shared how musical frequencies impact us. It’s no accident that the tagline of my sound healing practice is “experience the beauty and power of sound.” Full disclosure: I can’t take full credit for those words. I literally heard them in my head after I’d taken some quiet time one afternoon to sit and just “be.”

Those flashes of inspiration, or divine downloads, as I like to call them, aren’t coincidental. They’re creation at its finest. My personal definition of sound healing is quite simple: using sound waves to shift the energy flow of a living being or environment. When I’m working with sound, I like to speak this truth: we’re creating with our intent and willingness to receive.

The Sound and the Reason

People come to sound healing for many reasons. The three I hear most often in my sound baths are:

  • “I need to relax.”

  • “I need to get out of my head.”

  • “I do so much for everyone else and I need to do something for myself.”

When I see an individual or a couple, those reasons usually go much deeper. In every single case, there’s energy that’s stuck in the body. We’re taught to undervalue our emotions and intuition, and we’re taught to keep going and doing instead of feeling our emotions, processing them, and learning to be.

The Nature of Be-ingness

What’s beautiful is that we can learn new ways of responding. Nature has its cycles of seeding, growth, harvest, and rest. We are part of nature and need that just as much. Sound offers us an opportunity to become present to whatever season we happen to be in at the time. When we allow our nervous systems to “rest and digest,” we can open to a new lived experience of feeling safe and fully present. In presence lies possibility. This leads to expansion instead of “stuckness” in the vibration of our cells, organs, bodily systems, and all of our energy fields.

Sound Benefits

Here are some of the benefits of sound that my clients have shared with me:

  • Ancestral healing

  • Anxiety relief

  • Better sleep

  • Stress relief

  • Connection with new spiritual helpers

  • Inner child reconnection

  • Mood improvement

  • Pain relief

  • Spiritual and soul reconnection

If you need to “see” proof of what sound can create, watch this documentary on Cymatics created by Swiss physician and natural scientist Hans Jenny. Yes, it’s from the 1960’s, but what it will show you is timeless and fascinating.

I invite you to explore sound: its art and science, its beauty and power, its mystery and majesty. Are you ready to open and receive?
